The Brief: Triptok is the name for content on TikTok about psychedelics and other trippy things.
TripTok is a side of TikTok that features psychedelic-inspired animations, information about taking drugs, and stories of people’s hallucinogenic trips. Due to TikTok’s Community Guidelines that prohibit “content that displays drugs, drug consumption, or encourages others to make, use, or trade drugs or other controlled substances,” much of the content on TripTok dances around the subject of drug use rather than talking about it directly. Many videos skirt around these rules by intentionally misspelling words related to drugs and using slang or euphemisms to talk about them. Other videos appear to violate these guidelines and show images that appear to be psilocybin mushrooms or other drugs.
At the time of writing, videos associated with the hashtag #TripTok have been viewed over 46 million times.
More broadly, much of the content on TripTok is about the philosophies, aesthetics, and legal activities of people who consume perception-altering drugs. Videos include classic psychedelic visuals, tutorials on how to have a drug-free “trip” via optical illusions, stoner music, and advice about drug consumption. Some creators share stories and skits about particularly good or bad trips they’ve had and use video editing to simulate the effects of psychedelics.
While dangerous so-called “challenges” that promote the consumption of dangerous substances like the Nutmeg Challenge and the Benadryl Challenge have spread on TikTok, members of TripTok specifically advise against trying dangerous methods of tripping like these. However, TripTok typically glorifies and encourages people to use illegal drugs like magic mushrooms, LSD, and marijuana.
