The Brief: KMS is an abbreviation for "kill myself."

This phrase “KMS,” although serious, is sometimes used as a joke online.

While it may be “just a joke,” joking about suicide can be a warning sign that someone is considering it. The best way to determine if a friend or a loved one is thinking about committing suicide is to ask them about how they are feeling. Asking someone if they are feeling suicidal will not “plant the idea in their head.”

If you or someone you know is dealing with depression or suicidal thoughts, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline can be reached 24/7 at 1-800-273-8255 and more resources can be found at the Suicide Prevention Resource Center.
