The Brief: Although the Met Gala 2020 has been canceled, digital events will be taking place on the same day to celebrate the event and capture some of its magic.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, one of the biggest nights in fashion – Anna Wintour’s Met Gala – has been postponed indefinitely. As the Met Gala usually includes celebrity guests, elaborate outfits, and memorable memes, the cancellation of this year’s event has been disappointing to many. Rather than let the occasion go entirely uncelebrated, both Vogue and High Fashion Twitter will be hosting digital versions of the event.

#MetGalaChallenge

Vogue and Billy Porter have teamed up to host an internet challenge in honor of this year’s gala: the #MetGalaChallenge. This virtual celebration is ongoing until May 3rd and invites participants to recreate their favorite Met Gala looks of years past and post them on Instagram. Winners will be announced on May 4th, the day the actual gala would have occurred.

With this year’s annual #MetGala (normally held on the First Monday in May) postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, we are mourning what is typically one of the glitziest red carpet events of the year. The star-studded affair was supposed to be held on May 4 this year and in the past, it has produced some iconic red carpet looks. For those still craving the glamour and extravagance that usually comes with the night, however, we are teaming up with @theebillyporter on a new Instagram challenge that pays tribute to the night’s peacocking spirit: Meet the #MetGalaChallenge. The task is simple: recreate your favorite red carpet look from a past #MetGala at home. Which ensemble you replicate, and what you use to make it, is entirely up to you—think outside of the box! hf twitter Virtual Met Gala

The online community known as High Fashion Twitter or hf twitter will be hosting their own virtual Met Gala on May 4, 2020. The theme of the IRL Met Gala was going to be “About Time: Fashion and Duration,” with inspiration from Virginia Woolf’s Orlando. The HFT will be following the same theme, and guests have been invited to participate by posting mood boards or photos of outfits that fit the theme.

Anyone can participate by tweeting their look with the hashtag #HfMetGala2020 or participating in specific challenges from HFT and signing up via a Google Doc. Virtual guests are being asked to make a $5 donation to the International Medical Corps and will receive a an e-book compiling standout looks from the event as a party favor.

This event has been organized by a group of 10 HFT members who range from ages 15-22, led by  Aria Olson. The Gala will last for 24 hours, starting at 12:01 am EST on May 4, 2020.
