As video games are increasingly played and talked about online, they are about more than just the hottest game. Video game live streaming technology allows thousands of people at once to tune-in to watch their favorite streamers play video games, commentate, or just goof around. Although the concept of watching a video of someone playing video games may seem silly, many people who watch live streams compare it to the experience of playing video games with friends.

Chat functions within video games and on streaming platforms have fostered the development of gaming-specific slang terms and abbreviations.

  • F In The Chat: Typing “f” into a Twitch chat is a way for stream viewers to “pay their respects” to something or someone. The phrase caught on after a feature in a video game asked players to press F on their keyboard to “pay respects” to virtual fallen soldiers.

  • That’s How Mafia Works memes reference the viral ad campaign for the app and game Mafia City. These memes make fun of the absurd Mafia City ads while also applying basic elements of the game to other scenarios for the sake of comedy or to make a point.
