For decades, the televised Super Bowl has been about more than just the football game. From ostentatious halftime shows to bizarre commercials, the Super Bowl has become an annual day of publicity stunts, overt patriotism, and, more recently, social media content generation. Super Bowl 2020 memes include references to moments in the game itself, the Pepsi Halftime show, commercials, various gaffes, and more from #SuperBowlLIV.

Although much attention is paid to elements other than the game itself, the event ultimately revolves around football. This year, the Kansas City Chiefs beat the San Francisco 49ers 31-20, coming back after being 10 points behind at the end of the 3rd quarter. Many game-related memes refer to the Chiefs’ final-quarter comeback.

Halftime Show

The Pepsi Halftime show featured iconic Latina artists Shakira and Jennifer Lopez accompanied by Bad Bunny and J Balvin. The twelve-minute performance included pole-dancing, twerking, statements about immigration, glittery costumes, and top-notch song and dance. Memes were inspired by moments including Shakira’s tongue thing and J. Lo’s pole spin, as well as how shook fans were after watching.

From The Commercials

As social media engagement and memes can play an important role for advertisers, the 2020 Super Bowl commercials featured many meme-able moments, both ones that were clearly brand-orchestrated and others that may have been less intentional.

Both President Donald Trump and former Mayor Mike Bloomberg bought political ads for the big game, which were met with mixed reactions.

Charlie Day, the actor who plays Charlie Kelly in It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, starred in several adds including cross-brand commercials for Tide Pods and Bud Light. This Charlie conspiracy theory meme references the plotline where he couldn’t decide when to wash his stained shirt.

In an ad for Rocket Mortgage, Jason Momoa starred in a commercial where he revealed that he is actually a much skinnier and balder man who wears a muscle suit and wig.

A video that initially seemed like Tom Brady announcing his retirement turned out to be a Hulu ad, as presented in this don’t say it meme.

Whether you love or hate Baby Nut, the reincarnated Mr. Peanut character elicited many online reactions and memes.

A commercial with cameos from Martin Scorcese and Jonah Hill for the new beverage Coke Energy inspired jokes about what kind of coke they’re referring to.

Bud Light debuted its entrance into the hard seltzer (and hard seltzer meme) market with two commercials starring Post Malone and an accompanying sponsored meme campaign.
