There is a petition with over 200,000 signatures for Netflix to cancel its upcoming release of the series Insatiable because of its negative and unhealthy portrayal of a fat young woman.  Insatiable‘s trailer tells the story of an overweight girl (played by a thin actress in a fatsuit) who is bullied in high school, miraculously loses weight, then seeks revenge on her classmates. Those calling for the series to be canceled argue that it perpetuates toxic ideas that girls are only respectable when they are thin and that thinness is the only standard of beauty.

The petition calls for the show to be canceled for the sake of the physical and mental health of viewers: “this series will cause eating disorders, and perpetuate the further objectification of women’s bodies. The trailer has already triggered people with eating disorders. Let’s stop this, and protect further damage.”

In the wake of the petition, some are criticizing such strong reactions to the trailer, arguing that people should give the film a chance.

The series is set to be added to Netflix on August 10.
