On July 15, Ivanka Trump tweeted a promotion for Goya Foods, sparking backlash and inspiring memes. The tweet included a picture of her smiling while holding up a can of Goya beans alongside the brand’s slogan: “If it’s Goya, it has to be good. Si es Goya, tiene queue ser bueno.”

This tweet came days after the company’s chief executive Robert Unanue said that “we’re all truly blessed” to have Trump as a leader at an event at the White House. These comments sparked significant backlash including a movement to #BoycottGoya for its support of a president who has repeatedly attacked Latinx and immigrant communities. In response to the boycott, some Trump supporters have been posting about buying more Goya products to show their allegiance.

President Trump also tweeted positively about Goya, writing “@GoyaFoods is doing GREAT. The Radical Left smear machine backfired, people are buying like crazy!”

Ivanka’s tweet has come under fire for potentially violating a rule from the United States Office of Government Ethics that states “Executive branch employees may not use their Government positions to suggest that the agency or any part of the executive branch endorses an organization (including a nonprofit organization), product, service, or person.”
