The Chicken Sandwich Wars began after Popeyes released a new menu item: a chicken sandwich on August 12. The buzz around this sandwich is undeniable and the sandwich itself is allegedly delicious. It even inspired a New Yorker article titled “The Popeyes Chicken Sandwich Is Here To Save America.” 

Not long after Popeyes announced their new sandwich on Twitter, Chick-fil-A clapped back, tweeting out their love for their own fried chicken sandwich. Since then, Popeyes, Chick-fil-A, and other fast-food chains have joined the so-called Chicken Sandwich Wars, debating who makes the best fried chicken sandwich in the nation.

Fast food social media accounts are at the center of this debate, replying to each other’s posts with jokes and drags. As with many viral trends, it’s unclear to what degree the buzz about these sandwiches occurred more organically or was cleverly orchestrated by these brands’ social media teams.
