The DIY hair curling technique known as “sock curls” has existed for a long time, and recently blew up on TikTok. The method involves twisting strands of hair around socks and leaving it in overnight, resulting in dramatic wavy curls. Sock curl videos are not new to TikTok, but the trend has gained significant popularity on the app, leading to coverage in publications including Teen Vogue, Dazed, and Allure.

Try The Sock Curls TikTok Trend

In order to try this technique, you’ll need 2-4 pairs of socks and a hair clip. While any long pair of socks will do the trick, we recommend these fun-patterned socks for shorter hair and these knee-length ones for longer hair. Some tutorials suggest using a curling gel or spray as well, but it’s not required.

To create your own sock curls, brush your (ideally damp) hair and pull it into several segments. Then, clip a sock to the top of a segment and twist your hair around it. You can either twist just the sock and the segment (over, under, repeat) or divide the segment into two and criss-cross it around the sock. Tie the bottom of the sock/hair twist with a hair tie or the end of the sock. Some tutorials suggest that you connect the bottom of the segment to the top in a loop while others say to leave your twist hanging down. Remove the clip and repeat until you’ve twisted and tied all the segments. Then, leave this in overnight. Beware that it may not be the most comfortable style to sleep in. The next morning, you can remove the socks and see how your hair turns out.
