The Brief: This meme is a reference to the films Bird Box, A Quiet Place, and Hush.

This meme is a play on “see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil” and the popular horror thrillers Hush, A Quiet Place, and Bird Box. The meme reads:

Can’t hear, can’t speak, can’t see, can’t …

In Hush, a deaf woman must avoid a masked killer who hunts her – can’t hear. In A Quiet Place, a family must remain absolutely quiet in order to evade a mysterious predator – can’t speak. In Bird Box, characters must shut their eyes and wear blindfolds in order to avoid a presence that makes people kill themselves – can’t see. This meme draws the connections between the sensory deprivation aspects of these films with a funny twist at the end.  The idea is that the people in the films can’t do various things and that the person or thing in the last panel cannot do something else. In the last panel, many of these memes include references from other memes and pop culture. Since the release of Bird Box on Netflix, many popular memes related to the film have spread online. This is a common format based on the film that is particularly viral on the me_irl subreddit.
