DEEP DIVE

“7 Rings,” Ariana Grande‘s second single since her album, Sweetener is already climbing to the tops of charts. Her music video quickly hit #1 on YouTube’s trending list. Like the video for “thank u, next,” this video is decked out in pink, stars some of Grande’s IRL friends, and features a cameo from her dog.

The title of the song is a reference to the 7 diamond rings that Ariana bought for herself and her six closest friends. It’s also a nod to the flex of “having six rings” the number of NBA championship rings Michael Jordan has.

The song starts off with a remixed 2019 version of “My Favorite Things” from The Sound Of Music.  The lyrics are unabashedly materialistic and positive as Ariana celebrates and brags about how her success and wealth afford her a luxurious lifestyle where she gets whatever she wants. The music video is filled with lavish party scenes, diamonds, and champagne.

The lines most likely to get stuck in your head:

“I want it, I got it, I want it, I got it
You like my hair? Gee, thanks, just bought it
I see it, I like it, I want it, I got it”

Slang Decoded

Ariana used many slang terms to emphasize her success, clout, and drip.
