The Brief: On TikTok, creators are making skits to a clip from the song "Toy" by Netta which includes dramatic chicken sounds.
The song “Toy” by Israeli singer Netta is often referred to as “the chicken song” on TikTok because of the sped-up chicken sounds made throughout the song. In an interview with wiwibloggs, Netta explained that the chicken sounds in the song reference someone who is cowardly, like a “chicken” and that “Baka is also ‘stupid’ in Japanese.”
Creators are using a clip from this “chicken song” on TikTok in a variety of skits and videos, many of which reference someone being turned into a chicken. At the time of writing, over 1.7 million videos have been made with a “Toy” sound clip with the following lyrics:
He’s a baka-mhm-bak-mhm-bakbak-bak-mhm-boy
I’m not your baka-mhm-bak-mhm-bak-mhm-bak-mhm-bak-mhm…
I’m not your toy, not your toy
You stupid boy, stupid boy
TikToker @g.ubblegum used the chicken sounds in a skit captioned “#pov : we’re in an argument and u use your chicken powers to make me sound like a chicken but then i break out of the spell (joke btw).”
pov: we’re in an argument and u use your chicken powers to make me sound like a chicken but then i break out of the spell (joke btw)
Inspired by @g.ubblegum, creator @itsjustaba’s video with the caption “POV you get possessed by a chicken while we’re in an argument” was viewed over 90 million times, received over 11 million likes, and led to numerous duets.
Other takes used more literal versions of the word “toy.”
pov: *plot twist* woody has had enough chile 😔🤚🏾 /inspo: @boyhatbucket
And, of course, #DeepTok had its own spin on the sound:
