The Brief: People are sending tweets with faux disclaimers that say "official sources stated that this is false and misleading" or "this claim is disputed."

Twitter recently introduced features that can flag false and/or misleading tweets. Twitter users are responding by making memes imitating the feature which has infamously been used on Donald Trump’s tweets. “Official sources stated that this is…” and “this claim is disputed” memes allow people to make statements and then add a comedic disclaimer to them stating whether they’re true or false.

By adding the โ“˜ symbol to tweets, people can make the disclaimer look more convincing, but these memes are typically more focused on making jokes than they are on critiquing Twitter’s content moderation policies. This meme format is particularly popular on stan Twitter where people are making statements about the people and groups they adore.
