The annual Met Gala is an event for celebrities to show off designer masterpieces which may or may not become internet memes.
*Live Updates from the Red Carpet*
Each year, the fashions worn at the Met Gala inspire a slew of memes. We’ll be keeping track of the hottest Met Gala memes of 2019 and looking back at some of the funniest memes of previous years.
The theme for this year’s 2019 Met Gala is “Camp: Notes on Fashion,” a reference to Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay “Notes on ‘Camp.'” Fans are already buzzing on Twitter, eagerly anticipating the stars’ arrivals.
And just like that, let the campy, bold, and memeable looks begin…
This lucky fan caught Lady Gaga on the street.
Gaga’s look came complete with a team of chaperones/dancers carrying umbrellas.
After a brief performance on the Pink Carpet using her skirt as a parachute, Gaga transformed her look. She removed a series of snaps and bows, revealing a much simpler black dress underneath.
If “Camp” is all about being extra, it doesn’t get more extra than that.
But she didn’t stop there. Gaga removed two more layers, stripping down to a sparkly bustier.
Her tranformation inspired many memes featuring four images, one for each look.
The crowd and internet literally died.
Gaga wasn’t the only one pretty in pink.
Pink seems to be a popular color choice this year, which comes as no surprise considering the Pink Carpet.
Serena Williams stunned in this neon look.
Billy Porter made an entrance fit for a king. Literally.
Enter internet fave, Harry Styles.
Serena Williams, Lady Gaga, Harry Styles, and Alessandro Michele of Gucci (pictured above with Styles) are this year’s Met Gala co-hosts and they did not disappoint.
Laverne Cox served looks at her first Met Gala, surprising no one and impressing everyone.
Stars continued to arrive, dressed to impress…
There were bound to be a few disappointments and social media users did not hide their feelings…
Poor Celine Dion inspired several memes with her OOTD.
And then there was Jared Leto – winner, loser, or straight up creepy?
The glitz and glam continued…
Ezra Miller turned heads before arriving thanks to a photo he shared on Twitter.
And then when he did arrive…
Queer artists and allies owned the carpet, but none more so than Lena Waithe who called attention to black drag queens and their connection to the theme, “Camp”.
Neons, metallics, and feathers proved to be extremely popular amongst the stars.
More than anything, this Met Gala was packed with pops of color.
Speaking of color, Kendall and Kylie Jenner cosplayed… as who, we’re not sure.
And it seems some folks didn’t get the color memo…
At least Tracee Ellis Ross made the extra effort to bring her own picture frame accessory.
There was at least one Yee Haw look…
And a lot of surprising blonde locks.
Also, can we talk about #CouplesGoals?
All in all, there was a lot to love about the 2019 Met Gala Pink Carpet, and if Katy Perry’s look is anything to go by, next year’s theme is sure to be LIT.
