Who is she?

JoJo might be best known for her signature hairstyle: a side ponytail and brightly colored bows, which she sells at Claire’s. She first became famous after appearing regularly on the reality TV show Dance Moms. Now, she has multiple fashion and merch lines, a YouTube channel, a contract with Nickelodeon, and millions of social media followers.

JoJo has over seven million subscribers to her YouTube channel where she shares her peppy personality, dance moves, fashion tips, and more. She has collaborated with Miranda Sings and Rosanna Pansino, and has a forthcoming series with Shane Dawson.

She has released several singles including “High Top Shoes,” “Boomerang,” and “Kid in a Candy Store.”

Jojo’s bubbly personality, dance moves, and celebrity status make her popular on Musical.ly, Twitter, and Instagram as well.

Memes, Hate, Stans

JoJo’s large internet presence means that she has both stans and haters. She is the subject of fan love, playful memes, and hateful, malicious content. This is a common occurrence, especially for young women and girls in the online public sphere. JoJo continues to keep up her positive attitude, even in the face of negativity. In July 2018, she tweeted “I’m ready to become a meme,” and received many responses, most of which made fun of things like her personality, quick speech, and hairline. So far, she has handled the double-edged sword that is internet fame with grace and confidence, perhaps because she sees all press as good press, or because she is a thick-skinned, positive teenager.
