Orange is the New Black, often abbreviated OITNB or O.I.T.N.B. is a Netflix original series created by Jenji Kohan about life inside a fictional federal women’s prison in Upstate New York. The series is a comedy-drama with an ensemble cast. Based on a memoir of the same name by Piper Kerman, the show follows the story of character Piper Chapman, a New Yorker sentenced to 15 months in prison.

Issues including the prison-industrial complex, the War on Drugs and mass incarceration are explored through humanizing portrayals of incarcerated women, featuring characters with a diverse set of races, sexualities, body types, and backgrounds. Orange is the New Black is Netflix’s most watched original series and has received numerous awards and award nominations.
