Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is quite different from its comedic late 90’s and early 00’s predecessor Sabrina The Teenage Witch. Although there is still a black cat named Salem, he neither talks nor is animatronic. This version is based on a dark comic book series by the publishers of the Archie Comics. It takes place in the same universe as Riverdale.

In Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, a sixteen-year-old Sabrina must make tough decisions, joining a satanic coven while also attending high school. The series is indeed chilling, spooky, and dark. Sabrina is a part of a coven of Satan-worshiping, occasionally cannibalistic, evil-loving witches and warlocks.  Sabrina deals both explicitly and implicitly with feminist and LGBTQ+ issues and themes. Although there are several characters of color, the show, for the most part, glosses over race.

There are some references to and depictions of sex, though without nudity. There are allusions to BDSM and young witches losing their virginity to Satan. In one episode, Sabrina briefly walks in on an orgy. There’s a fair amount of violence, blood, and gore, including murder, hangings, autopsies, and suicide. A few curse words are used throughout the show.
