The Brief: TikTokers are creating videos that imagine themselves competing in The Hunger Games under the hashtag #HungerGames.

DEEP DIVE
#HungerGames is trending on TikTok after creators shared videos recreating the hit 2012 dystopian action film The Hunger Games, based on a young adult novel of the same name. In the film, one child was selected each of the 12 different districts to battle it out to the death in a field filled with weapons for the government’s enjoyment. While Hunger Games-themed videos have appeared on TikTok before, a surge of videos in late June 2020 has led to the hashtag trending on the app. It has accrued over 461 million views.
A popular video features creator @Garrettgiggles running around a field, completely unprepared for The Games. He starts by grabbing a backpack and then backtracking for cold water. He also struggles to climb a tree and complains the entire time — a sure ways to lose The Games. The hilarious video was watched over 2.4 million times and received over 728,000 likes.
@garrettgiggles pov: he tried his best 🥴 #hungergames#comedyskit#comedy#skit#funny#humor#gays#SummerVlog#fyp#foryou#valleygirl#nature#hikers#acting#actors#fashion
User @Jeff_hyer’s skit about hosting a TikTok live stream while competing in The Games earned him 462,000 likes on the video. It was viewed over 2 million times, too.
@jeff_hyer if you catch every joke I commend you #hungergames #katnisseverdeen
@Byefelisa’s video captioned, “Me in the Hunger Games doing the peace sign every time I see a camera so all the sponsors know I’m the quirky one,” received over 164,000 likes and was watched over 876,000 times.
