The Brief: The May 2021 version of the #HoldUpChallenge is marked by creators sitting down and moving their feet from side to side.

DEEP DIVE
The #HoldUpChallenge on TikTok is growing in popularity on the app. It is a second wave of a trend that saw TikTokers learning to Crip walk. The trend was heavily side-eyed by viewers who felt the dance was being gentrified and done without regard to its origins.
The new #HoldUpChallenge appears to deviate from the former trend and isn’t receiving the backlash the former did, either. It sees creators seated while moving their feet from side to side and crossing one foot over the other.
This trend began growing in popularity in the US in late May 2021. The associated hashtag #HoldUpChallenge has accrued over 16.3 million views. The trend is performed to “The Next Episode” by Dr. Dre featuring Snoop Dogg.
This TikTok video with sneakers enthusiast @YourKoreanDad and actor @ChristaAllen (known on the app for her role in 13 Going On 30) is the wholesome collab we never knew we needed.
