The Brief: The #BackPocketChallenge on TikTok has women filming from the back pocket of their pants to record people checking them out.
By placing their phones in their back pockets with the camera on, women are sharing evidence of how many people (mostly men) stare at their butts in the #BackPocketChallenge on TikTok. This challenge invites people to see how other people look at them and their bottoms by putting their phone in their back pocket and then walking around a public place like a store.
While some passersby caught looking may just be glancing, or already facing that direction, some more obvious onlookers have been caught staring, and even taking pictures. The comments sections of these videos include other women commiserating about the objectification they face from men. Other commentators question if people were actually staring at their butts or looking at their phones hanging out of their pockets.
At the time of writing, videos associate with the hashtag #BackPocketChallenge have been viewed over 48 million times on TikTok. Some iterations of this trend take a jokier approach, filming their dogs’ reactions or adding photos of heartthrob celebrities into the mix of people staring at them. These videos are often set to a remix of the song “Fireflies” by Owl City that repeats the line “you would not believe your eyes.”
the last one though. 😆😳🙈 #backpocketchallenge
