The Brief: The "You Must Be The ... My Son/Daughter Is Dating" trend features TikTokers finding out their crush is seeing someone else through their crush's parent.

TikTokers are finding out their crush or boyfriend is seeing someone else in the “You Must Be The … My Son/Daughter Is Dating” trend. It is marked by the TikToker meeting their crush’s parent for the first time. The parent greets them and includes a comment on a feature or trait they know about their child’s crush, like hair color or aesthetic. This, in turn, reveals that the TikToker is not who the parent thinks they are. These videos are performed to producer/DJ Ghost 609’s slow and reverb mix of Tame Impala’s “Let It Happen.”  There are over 39,000 videos linked to the sound on TikTok. The trend began growing in popularity on July 22.

A popular take on the trend is by creator @charlotteroseandfriends. In the video, the TikToker met her crush’s mom wearing an orange oversized sweater, loose jeans, tube socks, layered necklaces, and a beanie. His mom asked, “You must be the girls who’s been leaving her scrunchies all over my son’s room?” Scrunchies are a sure sign of a VSCO girl, not exactly @charlotteroseandfriends’ aesthetic in the TikTok. The video received over 1.6 million likes and 5 million views in a day.

Another popular take was by @benedte. In it, the parent asked, “You must be the girl that my son FaceTimes every night?” The catch is the video contains lagging footage, which is meant to be indicative of an Android device. This video amassed over 1.2 million views and 389,000 likes in 24 hours.

Tiktoker @Dudestopitpls’ video compared his trendy style and slim physique to that of a football player. It received over 436,000 likes and 1.1 million views.
