The Brief: Many fans responded to a short Super Bowl Halftime ShowSpongeBob tribute by making memes about it.

DEEP DIVE
Sweet Victory Or Bitter Defeat?
Sweet Victory Memes express SpongeBob fans’ reactions to the Super Bowl Pepsi Halftime Show. Yes, there was a tribute to the late SpongeBob SquarePants creator Stephen Hillenburg during the 2019 Super Bowl Halftime show. It consisted of a brief animation of Squidward and his marching band from the episode “Band Geeks” introducing Travis Scott, who performed alongside Maroon 5 and Big Boi. As the introductions to Travis Scott’s song “Sicko Mode” sounds similar to “Sweet Victory,” some people thought that Sweet Victory was being performed, only to realize that it was Sicko Mode instead. Although it was surprising to many that this tribute actually occurred, fans had been long anticipating it. A petition for the song Sweet Victory to be performed at the halftime show accumulated over 1.2 million signatures. Leading up to the Super Bowl, there were multiple rumors and hints about a Sweet Victory performance becoming a reality.
However, for many, the halftime tribute fell flat. Many fans wished that the short inclusion of beloved SpongeBob characters had been more thorough and had actually included a cover of Sweet Victory from one of the musicians.
