The Brief: Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk sent out a tweet asking for "dank" memes.

DEEP DIVE
Letting the internet users know that he’s in-the-know on all the lingo, Elon Musk sent out a tweet on Thursday asking his followers to “Send me ur dankest memes!!”

He then went even further to show that he’s in-the-know, referencing the latest moth meme trend:
Not moths tho

What’s all the buzz about?
Elon Musk is known for doing outrageous things online and IRL like smoking weed on Joe Rogan’s podcast, sending a Tesla into space, and misleadingly tweeting that Tesla would go private with shares priced at $420. He is also the subject of many memes including ones derived from an image of him smoking a blunt. Arguably, Elon himself has become a conceptual meme due to his various stunts and billionaire-trying-to-be-a-normal-guy vibe.
This tweet is out-of-character for a CEO but in-character for Elon Musk. By using the proper (and weed-related) slang — asking for dank memes, he is characteristically toeing a line between being cool and a nerd.
Of the thousands of responses, many people tweeted back pictures of their dankest memes, some of which made fun of Musk himself. Others made fun of him for tweeting this in the first place.
