“Look at the material” traces back to reality TV star Tiffany “New York” Pollard. She competed for rapper Flavor Flav’s heart on the dating show Flavor of Love. New York and another contestant arrived at the final elimination ceremony wearing the same dress. They began throwing shade at each other over who looked better. At one point, New York modeled the dress, making a full 360- degree turn, before saying, “Look at the material. ”
